If you end up with a VR headset, at some point you're going to hear the term "photogrammetry". This is where you take thousands of photos of something, and you stitch these photos together to make a 3D environment. It's the kind of environment that you can walk around inside of, and view from multiple angles. Right now the technique is still very primitive, and the resolutions of current headsets are very low, but Valve has recognized the power of this technique. You can use this free software to visit the surface of Mars, an old cemetery or the game world of the Talos Principle. This is an absolute must own piece of software if you have a Vive or Rift.
